Measuring the melting and runoff on Juneau Ice Field. Optical fiber was anchored to the bottom of meltwater streams atop the Juneau Ice Field to document the rate of melting, heat transfer from the meltwater to the glacier, and the mechanisms of formation of the complex drainage patterns that form on melting glaciers.  In many places, the researchers were suspended over the melting streams with climbing harnesses while the cable was installed, to protect them from being carried downstream, and occasionally under, the glacier!
